about

The Paraiyar (which is the origin of the English word 'pariah') are a social caste among Indian and Sri Lankan societies associated with funeral drumming and burying the dead. They're also associated with "drunkenness, shamelessness, brutality, truthlessness, uncleanliness, disgusting food practices, and an absolute lack of personal honour".

Because of this, they are treated as outcasts of society being considered 'unclean'. But we ask, "unclean from whose perspective?" After all, life itself is a messy thing, and beautiful messes can lead to wonder, exploration, novelty and a better sense of what exactly this weird thing that we call reality really is... Plus if you think about it, society wouldn't be able to function without the contributions of these kinds of people. Kinda makes you think about what is considered 'essential work' right? A thorny issue which has been laid bare for all to see during this crazy pandemic... So in many ways, this album is a tribute to the ones who are fighting to exist and to be heard. The ones who got left behind. Sure, they can be a total mess at times. But can also be more honest in some ways. We see you.

Because these people are somewhat placed outside of society's 'box' they end up having a better perspective of the box everybody else is in - with all of its corners, limitations and loopholes, as well as its wonders and flaws that all remain unseen by most people inside the box.

The message of this album is that even though these people remain as outcasts, almost exiled from society's proverbial 'box', they possess a better understanding and clear perspective of the box. Living with this knowledge leads them to pray for those inside the box - in the hopes those people may also someday truly 'see' the box they're in, and come to understand the totality, good and bad, of the box and it's inner workings. If some people did, their lives might not be so bad after all.
